1. What is Funding Rate Arbitrage in Crypto Perpetuals?
In cryptocurrency derivatives, perpetual futures contracts do not have an expiry date. To anchor the contract price to the underlying spot index, crypto exchanges use a periodic mechanism called the Funding Rate. Every 8 hours (or 1 hour on high-volatility exchanges), long position holders pay short position holders (positive funding), or short holders pay long holders (negative funding).
Funding rate arbitrage (often termed cash-and-carry or basis trading) is a delta-neutral quantitative strategy designed to harvest these fee payments while eliminating directional market risk. By buying spot Bitcoin or Ethereum and simultaneously shorting an equal dollar amount of perpetual contracts, the trader remains 100% price-neutral while collecting predictable payouts every funding settlement window.
